Shinta Mani Mustang
Shinta Mani Mustang opened in August 2023 in the Kali Gandaki valley, a short drive from Jomsom airstrip at roughly 2,800m. In 2026 Robb Report placed it first in its list of the fifty greatest luxury hotels on earth, chosen by the publication’s travel masters, ahead of properties in Rwanda, Japan and Scotland.
Worth knowing before you choose it
Reaching it depends on the Jomsom flight, which leaves Pokhara early because the wind funnels up the gorge later in the morning, and which is cancelled outright when the weather closes in. Anyone travelling here needs a buffer day before an international departure. That is the trade for being somewhere this remote.
The altitude is real. At around 2,800m some guests notice the first evening, and the standard advice applies: arrive, sit still, drink more than you think you need. It is also why we base guests here for several nights rather than pushing straight on to Muktinath at 3,800m.
Mustang is high desert. It is dry, bright and windy, and the monsoon that soaks the rest of Nepal barely reaches this valley. That is the reason to come, but it is not a soft climate.
The property
Twenty nine suites, designed by Bill Bensley, whose work here runs to hand painted detail, deep colour and a great deal of local craft rather than the restraint the mountains might suggest. Nilgiri fills the windows on the north side.
The lodge runs its own guides and excursions into the valley, which is what makes a single base workable: Marpha, Kagbeni, Jharkot and Muktinath are all reached and returned from in a day.
Who tends to choose it
Guests who want the trans Himalayan landscape without trekking to reach it, pilgrims and travellers heading for Muktinath who would rather acclimatise properly than arrive and leave, and anyone who prefers to unpack once and let the days move around the weather.
It also suits people who have already seen Everest and Annapurna from the usual angles and want the side of the range the monsoon never reaches.

Where it sits in a journey
Shinta Mani Mustang is the base for our Kingdom of Mustang journey, which spends five nights here so the valley is reached from one place rather than moved through.
