North of the Annapurnas the rain stops. The Kali Gandaki has cut a corridor between two eight thousand metre massifs, and the monsoon that soaks the rest of Nepal arrives here already wrung out. What is left is a high desert of ochre cliffs, whitewashed villages and barley terraces, closer to Tibet than to Kathmandu in every way that matters.

This is where you spend five nights, at a lodge that Robb Report placed first in its fifty greatest luxury hotels on earth for 2026. Twenty nine suites, built by Bill Bensley, standing above the river with Nilgiri filling the window. It is the reason a journey to Mustang no longer means choosing between the landscape and how you live in it.

The valley rewards staying put. You are based in one place for the whole Mustang section rather than moving each night, which means the days can be built around weather, light and how you are feeling rather than around the next transfer. Marpha one day, Kagbeni the next, Muktinath when you are ready for the altitude.

That last point is not incidental. Muktinath sits at 3,800m and people do get hurt reaching it too quickly. Mustang district recorded eleven visitor deaths from altitude sickness in a single seven month period. You go up on the fourth day in the valley, not the first, and the three nights before it are what make the difference.

The culture is Tibetan Buddhist, and it has been shaped by a trade route rather than by tourism. Salt came south and grain went north through this corridor for centuries. At Muktinath, Buddhist nuns and Brahmin priests worship at the same shrine, which is less a curiosity than the clearest statement of how belief works in this valley.

Two days in the Kathmandu Valley open the journey, deliberately, so that the Newar and Hindu context is in place before you fly into a region where the culture becomes unmistakably Tibetan. Arriving in Mustang without that background costs you most of what you are looking at.

Departures are private and shaped around your dates. One day in the itinerary is left entirely open, and it is the one guests most often say they would keep.

Journey Itinerary

Day 01

Accommodation Options

Arrival in Kathmandu

You are met at the airport and welcomed with the Panchakanya, five young women in traditional dress offering flowers and blessings, then a Sagun of yoghurt, rice, vermillion and betel nut, each standing for something the household wishes on you.

Your guide joins you later to walk through the route north, the flying, the altitude and how the Mustang days are paced. Ask everything now.

The evening is yours.

  • Duration:Airport transfer, 30 minutes
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Welcome dinner
  • Accommodation:Heritage hotel, Kathmandu
Day 02

Accommodation Options

The Valley Before the Himalaya

Boudhanath first, where the stupa is circled every morning by Tibetan families whose grandparents came south through passes not far from where you are going tomorrow. Then Pashupatinath, where the cremations run on the Bagmati and nothing pauses for visitors.

The afternoon goes into the quieter valley: courtyards behind low doorways, a restoration workshop, carvers working to patterns set generations ago.

There is a reason this day comes first. In two days the culture around you becomes Tibetan Buddhist and stays that way, and knowing what it is being contrasted against is most of the value.

  • Duration:Full day, private specialist
  • Max Altitude:1,400m
  • Meals:Breakfast
  • Accommodation:Heritage hotel, Kathmandu
Day 03

Accommodation Options

West to Pokhara

You fly west and drop into a warmer, greener basin under the Annapurnas.

Nothing is scheduled for the afternoon beyond the lake. Phewa is flat and slow, the range stands behind the far shore, and the point of the day is to be rested before an early start.

If the evening light is worth it, the sunset is arranged. If it is not, nobody pretends otherwise.

  • Duration:Domestic flight, then transfer
  • Max Altitude:Around 800m
  • Meals:Breakfast
  • Accommodation:Luxury property, Pokhara
Day 04

Accommodation Options

Into the Kali Gandaki

The flight north goes early, because the wind comes up the gorge later and the aircraft will not fight it. The valley opens, the green falls away within minutes, and Nilgiri comes up above the river corridor.

You are met at Jomsom and driven the short distance to the lodge. Twenty nine suites, stone and colour and Bensley’s hand everywhere in it, and a window with the mountain in it.

The afternoon belongs to the resort and to sitting still, which at this altitude on the first day is not laziness but the correct instruction.

  • Duration:Air transfer and private excursion
  • Max Altitude:Around 2,800m
  • Meals:Full board
  • Accommodation:Shinta Mani Mustang
Day 05

Accommodation Options

Marpha, Apple Country

Marpha sits two hours below Jomsom at 2,700m, whitewashed, tight-laned, and built to keep the wind out rather than to be photographed.

This is farming country in a place with almost no rain. Every field is fed by a channel someone maintains, every wall is doing a job, and the apples the village is known for exist because of that work rather than the climate. Walking it with someone who can explain the water is the difference between a pretty village and a functioning one.

Lunch is back at the lodge or laid out somewhere on the valley floor. The late afternoon is wellness, or nothing.

  • Duration:Village walk and private lunch
  • Max Altitude:2,700m
  • Meals:Full board
  • Accommodation:Shinta Mani Mustang
Day 06

Accommodation Options

Kagbeni, the Gateway North

Kagbeni stands at 2,804m where the Kag joins the Kali Gandaki, and it is the last village before the restricted country begins. Mud brick, passages you have to duck through, prayer walls, and a red gompa above the rooftops.

For centuries this was a customs point on the salt road: salt came south from the Tibetan plateau, grain and rice went north. The village is built the way it is because of that traffic, not despite it.

A cultural specialist opens the monastery and the village properly. The road north from here is where Upper Mustang starts, and you can see it going.

  • Duration:Village and monastery, private guide
  • Max Altitude:2,804m
  • Meals:Full board
  • Accommodation:Shinta Mani Mustang
Day 07

Accommodation Options

Jharkot, Jhong and Muktinath

Jharkot and Jhong first, both stacked in ochre above the valley, both older than they look and still lived in.

Muktinath sits at 3,800m. The pagoda temple holds a black shaligram, one of the fossil stones the Kali Gandaki gives up, which Hindus take as Vishnu present in stone. Behind it, 108 spouts run cold along a curved wall, and pilgrims pass under every one of them. At Jwala Mai a blue flame burns out of the ground and has not stopped.

Buddhist nuns and Brahmin priests both worship here, at the same shrine, on the same day. That is the reason this valley matters, and it explains more than any single monument in it.

  • Duration:Full day excursion
  • Max Altitude:3,800m
  • Meals:Full board
  • Accommodation:Shinta Mani Mustang
Day 08

Accommodation Options

Mustang Without a Schedule

Nothing is planned. This is the day the itinerary leaves alone, and it is the one guests most often say afterwards that they would keep.

Walk somewhere with a guide. Ride. Take a bike down the valley. Go deeper into a village you liked. Sit through a yoga and meditation session, or a wellness programme built on the consultation. Take the helicopter and see the range from above.

Or stay at the lodge and let the valley do the work, which more people choose than expect to.

  • Duration:Open day, guest's choice
  • Max Altitude:Around 2,800m
  • Meals:Full board
  • Accommodation:Shinta Mani Mustang
Day 09

Accommodation Options

Mustang to Kathmandu

The morning flight out of Jomsom goes early again, weather allowing, and there is a buffer built in because sometimes it does not.

Pokhara, then on to Kathmandu, arriving with the afternoon largely intact.

Dinner is the farewell, arranged around what this journey turned out to be for you rather than booked as a table somewhere.

  • Duration:Flights, subject to weather
  • Max Altitude:1,400m
  • Meals:Breakfast, dinner
  • Accommodation:Luxury hotel, Kathmandu
Day 10

Departure from Kathmandu

A representative accompanies you to the airport for your flight home.

You leave having stood under the 108 spouts at 3,800m, walked a salt road village that predates the border it served, and slept five nights in a valley the monsoon never reaches.

Guests write to us afterwards more often than they expect to. Usually about the open day.

Common Questions

The questions guests ask us most often about Mustang, on what Lower Mustang actually covers, how the altitude is handled and why five nights sit in one lodge.

Understanding Mustang

Expand all

No, and the distinction matters. This journey covers Lower Mustang: Jomsom, Marpha, Kagbeni, Jharkot, Jhong and Muktinath. The walled city of Lo Manthang sits in Upper Mustang, which is a restricted area needing a separate permit and considerably more time. Lower Mustang gives you the same trans-Himalayan landscape and Tibetan Buddhist culture without that restriction.

The Kali Gandaki has carved a corridor between two of the highest massifs on earth, and the monsoon arrives already spent. The result is a high desert of ochre cliffs and barley terraces that looks and feels like the Tibetan plateau rather than like Nepal.

Because Mustang is culturally Tibetan Buddhist, and understanding what it contrasts with makes the difference between looking at a monastery and understanding one. Flying straight north costs you most of the meaning.

Altitude and safety

Expand all

Muktinath at 3,800m is the highest point, reached on the fourth day in the valley. The lodge sits around 2,800m, and the three nights there before Muktinath are deliberate acclimatisation rather than filler.

It is, and it should be taken seriously. Mustang district recorded eleven visitor deaths from altitude sickness in one seven month period, with cases at Jomsom, Marpha and Muktinath itself. Hospital research in the valley found a same-day ascent from Pokhara to Muktinath carried roughly twice the odds of moderate or severe altitude sickness against the same climb spread over three days. This itinerary is built the slow way.

They go early because the wind funnels up the gorge later in the morning, and they are cancelled when the weather closes in. A buffer is built into the return, and anyone who tells you the sector is dependable in poor weather is not being straight with you.

The lodge and the days

Expand all

Shinta Mani Mustang, for five nights. Robb Report placed it first in its fifty greatest luxury hotels on earth for 2026. It holds twenty nine suites, was designed by Bill Bensley, and stands above the Kali Gandaki with Nilgiri in view.

Because it lets the days bend to the weather and the light instead of to a transfer schedule, and because at this altitude repeated moves cost you more than they give. Marpha, Kagbeni and Muktinath are all reached and returned from in a day.

Whatever you want it for. Walking, riding, biking, a village you did not finish, wellness, a helicopter flight, or nothing at all. It is the day guests most often say they would keep if they had to cut one.
