Himalayan Elegance is our luxury Annapurna trek and sacred wellness journey. It suits travellers who want to reach Annapurna Base Camp without giving up comfort: couples, solo travellers, photographers and wellness seekers who have reasonable fitness and, in most cases, have never trekked before. Most people who book it have been thinking about Nepal for years. They want to stand under Annapurna I and have it mean something, but they do not want to spend a fortnight cold, badly fed and sharing a dormitory. That is the gap this luxury Annapurna trek fills.

What this luxury Annapurna trek includes that others do not

It opens in the Kathmandu Valley, where you sit with lamas at Bouddhanath while they explain what the stupa is actually for, watch thangka painters work to patterns their grandfathers used, and talk with Vedic scholars about questions most of us never make time for. None of it is staged. Far Ridge Collective takes you to people we know, in the places where they work.

Then the trail: out of Pokhara through Ghandruk and Chhomrong, past Bamboo and Deurali, up to Machhapuchhre Base Camp and into the Sanctuary, a protected landscape managed by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. Rhododendron forest at first, then the tree line thins and the amphitheatre opens with Annapurna I standing 8,091m above you. What guests write to us about afterwards, more often than the mountain, is the end: Vipassana before dawn, singing bowls, Shirodhara, and long conversations with people who have kept these traditions their whole lives. You go home rested rather than wrecked.

Journey Itinerary

Day 01

Accommodation Options

Arrival in Kathmandu

You are met at the airport and welcomed with the Panchakanya, five young women in traditional dress offering flowers and blessings, then a Sagun of yoghurt, rice, vermillion and betel nut, each standing for something the household wishes on you.

Your guide joins you later to walk through the route, the safety arrangements, your kit and how the acclimatisation is paced. Ask everything now. It is easier here than on a hillside.

Dinner is Newari, in a private room, with classical and tantric dance performed for your group alone.

  • Duration:Airport transfer, 30 minutes
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Welcome gala dinner
  • Accommodation:Five star hotel, Kathmandu
Day 02

Accommodation Options

Kathmandu: Temples, Monasteries and the Valley's Craftsmen

Pashupatinath first, on the Bagmati, where cremation rites have run without interruption for centuries. Your guide explains what you are watching and why, which matters at a site where visitors tend to photograph first and understand later.

Then Bouddhanath. You walk the kora with the pilgrims, and a lama sits with you afterwards to talk about what the stupa is for and how Tibetan practice actually works day to day. A private conversation, not a lecture to a coach party.

Bhaktapur in the afternoon: potters at their wheels, woodcarvers on the temple repairs, mask makers working to designs older than the square they sit in. Newar craft is a living trade here, not a heritage display.

  • Duration:Full day sightseeing
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Five star hotel, Kathmandu
Day 03

Accommodation Options

Flight to Pokhara

A short flight west, with Annapurna and Dhaulagiri along the right hand windows if the morning is clear. Ask for that side at check in.

The afternoon is yours on Phewa Lake. Most guests take a boat out, some visit the International Mountain Museum, and a few do neither and sit by the water instead.

Tomorrow the walking starts.

  • Duration:25 minute flight plus private transfer
  • Max Altitude:820m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium resort, Pokhara
Day 04

Jeep to Sauli Bazaar, Trek to Chhomrong

A private jeep takes you to Sauli Bazaar, where the road ends and the trail begins.

You climb through terraced fields and rhododendron forest, in full colour in spring and simply green and quiet in autumn. The path runs through Gurung settlements where the farming year still sets the rhythm of the day.

Chhomrong is built along a ridge with Annapurna South ahead and Machhapuchhre to the east. A good first day for finding your pace.

  • Duration:2 hour drive plus 5 to 6 hours trekking
  • Max Altitude:2,170m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium mountain lodge
Day 05

Chhomrong to Himalaya Hotel

The trail drops to the Chhomrong Khola, crosses it, and climbs the far side. That descent and re-ascent is the hardest hour of the day and it comes early.

After Sinuwa the valley narrows and the forest changes. Rhododendron gives way to bamboo, the tree line starts to thin, and rock walls close in on both sides.

You are walking into the Sanctuary now rather than towards it.

  • Duration:6 to 7 hours trekking
  • Max Altitude:2,900m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium mountain lodge
Day 06

Trek to Annapurna Base Camp

The day you came for.

You climb through Deurali onto the glacial moraine, then stop at Machhapuchhre Base Camp with hanging glaciers directly above and Fishtail filling the skyline. From there the last stretch opens into the Sanctuary itself: an amphitheatre with Annapurna I at 8,091m on one side, then Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre around the rest of the rim.

Stay out for sunset. The light leaves Annapurna I last and the whole bowl turns gold, then red, then cold very quickly.

  • Duration:5 to 6 hours trekking
  • Max Altitude:4,130m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium mountain lodge
Day 07

Sunrise at Base Camp, Descent to Bamboo

Set an alarm. Sunrise here is why people put up with the cold night before it, and it lasts about twenty minutes.

Then you turn around, back past Machhapuchhre Base Camp where the glaciers read differently in morning light, and down through Deurali. The alpine ground gives way to green, the air thickens, and by the bamboo forest you will notice how much easier breathing has become.

Downhill is kinder on the lungs and harder on the knees. Poles help.

  • Duration:6 to 7 hours trekking
  • Max Altitude:2,310m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium mountain lodge
Day 08

Bamboo to Jhinu Danda and the Hot Springs

An easier day, following the Modi Khola down through forest and suspension bridges, past settlements built into the valley wall.

Twenty minutes below Jhinu Danda there are natural hot springs on the riverbank. After five days of walking, sitting in mineral water with the river running past is worth the extra descent, and the climb back up is the price you pay for it.

Guests rate this among the best afternoons of the trek. It is also where the walking stops feeling like effort.

  • Duration:5 to 6 hours trekking
  • Max Altitude:1,780m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium mountain lodge
Day 09

Accommodation Options

Jhinu Danda to Nayapul, Return to Pokhara

The last morning on the trail, down through terraced farmland and villages with the Modi Khola alongside and the mountains receding behind.

A jeep meets you at Nayapul and takes you back to Pokhara, and to a proper shower. The lakeside is there for the evening if you want it.

You are back at 820m. It will feel like sea level.

  • Duration:5 to 6 hours trekking plus private jeep
  • Max Altitude:820m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Premium resort, Pokhara
Day 10

Accommodation Options

Flight to Kathmandu

A short flight back over the same valleys, then a private transfer into the city.

The afternoon is deliberately empty. You have walked six days and the next three ask something different of you, so this one is for sleeping, eating properly and making no decisions.

In the evening, sitar, tabla and harmonium played together, the raga built slowly, for your group only.

  • Duration:25 minute flight plus private transfer
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Breakfast and farewell dinner
  • Accommodation:Five star hotel, Kathmandu
Day 11

Wellness: Foundations

The trek is finished. What follows is the part guests tell us they did not expect to matter as much as it did.

The day starts before dawn with Vipassana at an ashram outside the city, led by teachers who have kept the practice for decades. Sitting still is harder than walking uphill and nobody pretends otherwise. Yoga follows once the light comes, working on what six days on the trail did to your hips, hamstrings and shoulders.

Late morning brings pranic healing and reiki with practitioners who work in these traditions full time, then a sound bath with singing bowls and gongs. Whatever you make of the theory, the effect on a tired nervous system is hard to argue with. The day closes over herbal tea with a sage who tells stories for as long as you want to sit there.

  • Duration:Morning programme, afternoon free
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Five star hotel, Kathmandu
Day 12

Accommodation Options

Wellness: Philosophy and Practice

Morning meditation at a Vajrayana monastery, guided by the lamas themselves. You sit where the monks sit, in a working monastery, not a room arranged for visitors.

Afterwards you go into the Kathmandu bahas with Newar Buddhist scholars. These are courtyard monasteries hidden behind ordinary doorways in the old city, most unmarked and closed to anyone without an introduction. Some hold bronzes and manuscripts that have never left the building. This is the Kathmandu that visitors walk past daily without knowing it is there.

The afternoon connects yoga, meditation and raga, the argument being that all three are one discipline approached from different directions. Then Shirodhara, warm oil poured in a steady line across the forehead, administered by doctors who will ask about your sleep and digestion first.

  • Duration:Morning programme, afternoon free
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Five star hotel, Kathmandu
Day 13

Accommodation Options

Wellness: Ritual, Ayurveda and Departure Eve

Yoga and pranayama to open, with more attention on breath than posture. After a week at altitude most guests find their lungs have quietly improved.

Then a Hindu temple or a Gurukul ashram, where priests walk you through rituals you have watched all week without quite following. Why the fire is lit in that order. What the thread means.

The afternoon is Ayurveda done properly: consultation first, then treatment chosen for you rather than off a menu. The journey closes with a meditation circle, chanting and candlelight, the group sitting together for the last time.

  • Duration:Morning programme, afternoon free
  • Max Altitude:1,350m
  • Meals:Breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Accommodation:Five star hotel, Kathmandu
Day 14

Departure from Kathmandu

A representative accompanies you to the airport for your flight home.

You leave having stood under Annapurna I, walked the Sanctuary in both directions, sat with lamas and Vedic scholars, and given three days to the kind of practice most people intend to start and never do.

Guests write to us afterwards more often than they expect to. Usually about the wellness days rather than the mountain.

Planning Your Luxury Annapurna Trek

Expand all

It is a luxury Annapurna trek of fourteen days, split three ways. Two days in the Kathmandu Valley with lamas, Newar scholars and working craftsmen. Six days walking the Annapurna Sanctuary to Base Camp and back down. Three days at the end given over entirely to yoga, Ayurveda and meditation. Far Ridge Collective runs it privately, on dates you pick.

This luxury Annapurna trek suits people who want the Sanctuary without roughing it. Couples, solo travellers, photographers and anyone who has been meaning to do this for years and would rather do it well. You need reasonable fitness, but you do not need trekking experience.

A standard trek takes whatever guesthouse has beds free and reaches the same base camp in fewer days. On this luxury Annapurna trek the city nights are somewhere like Dwarika’s, a hotel built around forty years of rescued Newari woodcarving, and the closing three days are spent with practising lamas, Vedic scholars and Ayurvedic doctors instead of in a departure lounge. Same mountain. Very different fortnight.

Private, always. There are no fixed departure dates. You tell us when you want to travel and we build the journey around those dates for your group of up to five.

Kathmandu, at Tribhuvan International Airport. Arrival and departure transfers are included, as are the domestic flights to and from Pokhara.

Three to six months is comfortable for spring and autumn, when the good hotels and lodges fill up. Shorter notice often works. Ask us and we will tell you what is still available.

Altitude, Fitness and Difficulty

Expand all

Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130m, which is 13,550 feet. You reach it on day six, after passing Machhapuchhre Base Camp earlier the same morning. The itinerary gains that height gradually across several days rather than rushing it.

The grade is moderate. Most days are five to six hours on well-maintained trail, with two longer days of six to seven. Nothing is technical and you will not need ropes, crampons or any climbing skill. What makes it demanding is walking day after day, and the thinner air near the top.

No. Plenty of our guests have never done a multi-day walk before. General fitness matters more than experience. If you can walk five or six hours and then get up and do it again the next morning, you are ready.

It is worth taking seriously on any trek above 3,000m and this one goes higher. The pacing is built around acclimatisation, and your guide is trained to spot the early signs and act on them. The Himalayan Rescue Association publishes good background on recognising symptoms. If you have a heart or respiratory condition, talk to your doctor before you commit.

Start about eight weeks out. Walking, hiking, cycling or swimming three or four times a week builds the base you need. Hills and stairs with a light daypack come closest to the real thing. We send a full preparation guide once your dates are confirmed.

Yes to both. Guests in their sixties and seventies finish this route regularly, and older children who enjoy walking do fine. The moderate grade and unhurried pace help. The honest test is whether everyone in the group can walk five or six hours on consecutive days at altitude.

Where You Stay and What You Eat

Expand all

In Kathmandu you choose between Dwarika’s Hotel, a Newari heritage property in Battisputali holding the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award, the Kathmandu Marriott in Naxal, Aloft in Thamel, or Dusit Thani Himalayan Resort out at Dhulikhel. In Pokhara it is Dorje’s Resort & Spa above Phewa Lake or The Pavilions Himalayas, a villa resort on an organic farm outside town. On the trail there are no five star hotels, so we book the best mountain lodges on the route and choose them for comfort, cleanliness and position rather than price.

All of them. A few are worth mentioning: a welcome dinner of Newari food with a private cultural performance, a Tibetan menu with fine wines and live sitar and tabla, and a farewell dinner with an Eastern classical ensemble. On the trail your lodge cooks fresh each day.

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies and religious requirements are all manageable in Kathmandu, Pokhara and on the trail. Tell us when you enquire so we can confirm it with every property before you arrive.

The Wellness Days

Expand all

Days 11 to 13 in Kathmandu are given over to it. Vipassana at dawn with certified teachers, morning yoga and pranayama, pranic healing and reiki, sound healing with singing bowls and gongs, Ayurvedic massage, herbal baths and Shirodhara. There are also philosophy sessions with Vajrayana lamas and Newar Buddhist scholars. Yoga and Ayurvedic treatments appear earlier in the journey too, not only at the end.

That is fine and it is common. Every session is guided and adjusted to whoever is in the room. Beginners are not left to work it out, and people with a daily practice are not held back.

Practitioners from within the traditions themselves. Certified yoga and meditation teachers, Vajrayana lamas, Newar Buddhist scholars, Vedic priests, reiki and pranic healing masters, and qualified Ayurvedic doctors. We use the people we know rather than whoever the hotel supplies.

Permits, Guides and Getting Around

Expand all

Yes. The ACAP permit for the Annapurna Conservation Area and the TIMS card are both arranged and included. All we need from you are passport details and photographs once your dates are set.

Yes. A licensed English-speaking guide stays with you for the full 14 days, with porters on the trekking section. Sightseeing in Kathmandu and Pokhara is led by a private cultural guide, and the wellness sessions are run by their own specialists.

Airport transfers at Kathmandu are included, and so are the 25 minute scenic flights to Pokhara and back. Everything on the ground is private vehicle.

October and November are the strongest window. The air is at its most stable and Annapurna I holds a clean edge against the sky for most of the day. Late March through May runs warmer, with rhododendron in flower along the lower trail. Outside those two windows we will still take you if your dates are fixed, and we will say plainly what the cloud is likely to do to your views.

Layers, boots you have already broken in, a warm down jacket for base camp, sun protection and a light daypack. A full list follows once you book. Anything you are missing can be bought or hired in Kathmandu before you set off.

Yes, and it often is. Because every departure is private you can stretch the wellness days, add Chitwan or Lumbini, slow the trekking pace or ask for a particular cultural encounter. Tell us what you have in mind when you write.
